Vettel wins in Melbourne after Safety Car blunder from Mercedes

Sebastian Vettel has won in Australia for the second consecutive year after a glitch in Mercedes software stopped Hamilton from pitting under the Virtual Safety Car.

Vettel jumped Hamilton and Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen after a ‘free pit-stop’ under the Virtual Safety Car which promoted the four-time world champion into the lead.

Mercedes admitted post race that a glitch in their computer software had failed which consequently failed to notify the pit wall that Hamilton was dangerously vulnerable if the Virtual Safety Car was deployed.

A frustrated Hamilton finished second, ahead of third place Kimi Raikkonen who managed to hold of charging Australian Daniel Ricciardo.

Mx Verstappen suffered an early spin at turn one in an attempt to hunt down the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.

A promising day for Haas however soon turned to disaster after both cars were forced to retire from the race due to botched pitstops.

Alonso drove his usual skilled self and brought his McLaren home to fifth.

Next round sees the circus move to Bahrain which will be covered live here, at Paddock Talk.
